What To Do When Your Boiler Breaks Down: A Step-by-Step Guide

A boiler breakdown is stressful, especially in the middle of winter. But before you call an engineer, there are a few things you can check yourself that might solve the problem.

Step 1: Check the Basics

• Is the thermostat set correctly and calling for heat?
• Is the timer/programmer set to the right schedule?
• Is the boiler pressure between 1 and 1.5 bar? (Check the gauge on the front)
• Has the gas supply been interrupted? Check other gas appliances
• Has the electricity supply tripped? Check your consumer unit

Step 2: Try a Reset

Many modern boilers have a reset button (usually labelled with a flame symbol or "reset"). Press it once and wait a few minutes. If the boiler fires up, the issue may have been a temporary fault. If it locks out again, don't keep resetting — call an engineer.

Step 3: Note Any Error Codes

If your boiler displays an error code on its screen, make a note of it. This helps the engineer diagnose the fault more quickly when they arrive. You can also check your boiler manual or the manufacturer's website for what the code means.
