Heat Pump vs Gas Boiler: Which Is Right for Your Home?
With the UK Government encouraging the move away from gas boilers, many homeowners are wondering whether a heat pump is right for their home. Both systems have their advantages — here's an honest comparison to help you decide.
Running Costs
Heat pumps are typically 3-4 times more efficient than gas boilers. However, electricity costs more per unit than gas, so the actual savings depend on your property's insulation, the heat pump's efficiency (COP), and current energy prices. For well-insulated homes, a heat pump can reduce heating bills. For poorly insulated homes, the savings may be marginal without improvements.
Installation Cost
A new gas boiler typically costs between £2,000 and £4,000 installed. An air source heat pump costs £8,000 to £15,000 before grants. With the Boiler Upgrade Scheme grant of £7,500, the gap narrows significantly — in some cases making a heat pump comparable to a premium boiler installation.
Property Suitability
Heat pumps work best in well-insulated homes with underfloor heating or large radiators. If your home has good insulation (cavity wall and loft insulation, double glazing), a heat pump could be an excellent fit. Older, poorly insulated properties may need improvement work first.
Environmental Impact
Heat pumps produce zero direct emissions and significantly lower carbon emissions overall — even accounting for electricity generation. As the UK grid gets greener, the environmental benefit of heat pumps will continue to increase.
